About the Fellowship
What is the Queer Futures Fellowship?
The Queer Futures Fellowship is an 8-week career-oriented mentorship and creative learning program for LGBTQ+ high school students, paired with supportive queer university mentors. The Fellowship includes a virtual core program open to participants nationwide, with additional benefits available through university-based chapters.
Who created this program?
The Fellowship was co-founded by Sooki Beeley and William Loh, with support from community partners including the San Mateo County Pride Center, the Youth Advisory Board (YAB), and the Queer Hope Institute. The program continues to grow through partnerships with universities, community organizations, funders, and researchers.
Is this an online or in-person program?
All participants take part in a virtual core program held over Zoom, including weekly workshops, mentorship check-ins, and community activities. Some participants may also have access to in-person opportunities through local university chapters.
Chapters & Participation
Do I need to be part of a university chapter to participate?
No. Anyone accepted into the Fellowship can participate in the virtual program, regardless of location or chapter affiliation.
What are university chapters, and what do they offer?
University chapters (such as those at the University of Southern California and San José State University) provide additional benefits, which may include:
- Stipends for selected mentors and mentees
- Program swag and materials
- Catered in-person events or workshops
- Optional or required in-person mentor–mentee meetings (in select cases)
- Campus-based volunteer, social, or professional development events
Chapter offerings vary by campus based on funding and partnerships.
Who can participate in chapter-based activities?
Chapter-based benefits are typically available to:
- High school fellows selected within that region, and/or
- University students enrolled at or affiliated with the host university
- And/or are subject to additional application essays and/or an interview as part of the selection process
Can I start a chapter at my university?
Yes. We are actively expanding and welcome students, faculty, and institutions interested in launching new chapters. To inquire about starting a chapter, contact queerfuturesfellowship@gmail.com.
Eligibility & Applications
Who can apply as a mentee?
LGBTQ+ or questioning high school students (grades 9–12) who are interested in creativity, college or career exploration, community engagement, or identity development. No prior experience required.
Who can apply as a mentor?
LGBTQ+ undergraduate or graduate students ready to support younger queer youth, share experiences, and help guide them through school, identity exploration, and future planning.
Do I need to live in the Bay Area?
No. The virtual program is open to participants from any region.
Is there a fee to participate?
No. The Fellowship is completely free.
Is there a GPA requirement?
No. We welcome students with all academic backgrounds.
Do I need to be “out” to apply?
Absolutely not. Students who are questioning, exploring, or not out publicly are welcome.
Program Structure
What’s the time commitment?
Fellows attend one weekly session (1–1.5 hours) or one asynchronous meeting each week. Expect ~2–3 hours per week total.
What happens if I can’t attend a live session?
Participants may complete sessions asynchronously within the virtual core program; however, university chapters may have additional requirements or policies regarding attendance and absences.
How are mentors and mentees matched?
Matches are based on shared interests, identity considerations, communication styles, and goals listed in the application.
What do weekly sessions include?
Workshops on queer history, creativity, professional skills, college/career planning, intersectionality, nature/spirituality, and community service.
Certificates, Services, and Projects
Do Fellows earn a Certificate of Completion?
Yes. Students who complete weekly sessions, check-ins, and major activities earn a Certificate recognizing leadership, service, and professional development.
Do Fellows earn service hours?
Yes. Fellows may earn volunteer service hours through community-based or creative projects.
Is there a final project?
Yes. Fellows can submit creative work to the Queer Futures Zine or contribute to the Queer Constellation archive.
Mentorship & Support
Is this a therapy or mental health program?
No. This is not therapy or a clinical program. However, mentors and mentees will work together to create a supportive, respectful, identity-affirming space.
What if my mentor/mentee isn’t a good fit?
You can contact program staff for help — we’re happy to adjust pairings if needed.
How do you keep the program safe and confidential?
We follow clear community guidelines about respect, privacy, and appropriate communication, and all mentors receive training on working with minors. Participants can always reach out to staff with questions or concerns.
Accessibility & Inclusion
What accessibility supports are available?
We can work with participants on accommodations related to scheduling, captions, pacing, technology access, and learning needs.
Is the Fellowship open to disabled or neurodiverse students?
Yes. We welcome participants with diverse access needs and learning styles.
Are trans, nonbinary, and questioning youth welcome?
Yes. This program was created for the full LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Can I apply again next year?
Yes. Returning Fellows are welcome and may be invited into leadership or advanced roles.
Can teachers, GSAs, parents, or community orgs recommend students?
Yes. We welcome referrals and collaboration.
How can I join the Queer Futures Fellowship Leadership Team?
Leadership positions are open to LGBTQ+ high school, undergraduate, and graduate students and may vary by chapter. Current open roles are listed on the About page of our website. To be considered for a leadership role, please submit a résumé and a 1-2 paragraph statement detailing your experience, qualifications, and interest in the position to queerfuturesfellowship@gmail.com.
